A pair of pants that bunches at the ankle. A blazer that pulls across the shoulders. A dress that fit last year and does not fit now. Most people replace the item. Most of the time, that is money you did not need to spend.
A tailor can fix more than you think. Hems, waist sizing, sleeve length, taken-in seams, a broken zipper. If the fabric and the seams are still in good shape, alterations usually cost less than a replacement and take less time than shopping for one.
Get it altered if the garment fits well in most places and is off in one or two spots. A suit jacket that fits your shoulders but hangs too long. Pants that fit your waist but pool at your shoes. A dress that is a half size too big through the middle. These are quick fixes, not full rebuilds.
Alterations also make sense for anything with sentimental or replacement value you care about. A suit you wear for work every week. A dress you plan to wear again. Hand-me-down pieces that are well made but sized for someone else.
If the fabric is worn thin, the seams are stressed in multiple places, or the item needs to grow or shrink more than a size, altering it usually costs more than it is worth. A good tailor will tell you this upfront instead of taking the job anyway.
